New York City, New York - 2025

One of my first international friends, João, moved to New York City for a few months with his girlfriend Dominique so they could improve their English. I originally met João when I was 16 through Pokémon, and I had once taken him and a group of other international players around Washington, D.C. to give them a glimpse of life in the United States. When I found out he would be living in New York, I knew I had to plan a trip. I would take this opportunity not only to reunite with him, but also to take them to some of my favorite spots in the city. I combined this mission with “making the rounds” to visit several other friends who live in New York through work, Pokémon, and good fortune. Though the trip was short, it was a powerful reminder of the value of friendships. You never know when or where you’ll cross paths again with the people you’ve met along the way.
